Update: Bankruptcy might be avoided (for a little while longer) thanks to last minute AmEx deal.

In a related note, ATA has filed for bankruptcy.

Has there been any successfully airline out there whose initials are not SWA?

Ah, but the beauty of capitalism. Wherever there is a loser in bankruptcy, there is usually a winner buying up good assets at fire sale prices.

AirTran was able to get some great deals purchasing ATA takeoff slots at Washington Reagan and some other assets from the bankruptcy trustee.
