Alitalia

Alitalia, Italy's flagship airline, is bankrupt and will be liquidated, said Augusto Fantozzi, the airline's administrator. A purchase offer from a group of Italian industrialists was withdrawn, and there are no other bids. The airline was hobbled for years by labor disputes and poor management and more recently was hit by the rising cost of fuel.

And then again, maybe not ...

It's by no means a done deal, but based on information developed around that discussion, AF/KL are apparently attempting to help keep it afloat. Time will tell whether it succeeds or not.

As you can see from some of the commentary, opinion is very divided regarding the wisdom of keeping Alitalia alive.

Albert, it appears that there's a pretty good fight going on for who (if anyone) gets Alitalia (AZ). Not only Air France (AF) / KLM (KL) but Lufthansa (LH) is in the mix; and a number of people think LH is the better choice because of their MUCH more extensive operations, already, throughout Italy (some 120 flights PER DAY, versus 50-60 a day for AF/KL). The unions at AZ are starting to get onboard, but it's no sure think they all will. There's some pretty good debates going on at the Airliners.net forum.

Thanks!
